Identify and explain the meaning of two defense mechanisms that you use. Are they helpful? Why or why not? Talk about an alternative way that you could change the coping mechanism that you currently use.
Today we are going to learn about defense mechanisms. These are ways that people cope with things that they may or may not like. They are engrained into our personality systems. Many people call them coping skills.
There are many of us that have maladaptive coping skills. These are coping skills that do not serve us well (defense mechanisms). Defense mechanisms keep us from emotional growth, having meaningful relationships and building insight. Basically, you can't climb Maslow's triangle with poor coping skills.
