Mood Disorders and Mental Illness effect 1 in 10 people with 1 in 5 of those people having a serious or chronic (long term) mental health problem.
While there is no cure for a mood disorder, there are a lot of treatments.
There are two types of mood disorders:
Depression and Mania
Some people have a combination of these conditions called bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder can effect both adults and children.
Children can have mood disorders as young a newborns.
Children with mood disorders are not usually diagnosed with “bipolar disorder” although at the end of the day, that is what it is.
Children are usually diagnosed with disruptive dysregulation disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder or a general mood disorder. It doesn’t matter what it is called it is all the same thing.
It is the inability for someone to calm there body down. This causes them to make a ton of bad choices.
Some people have mood issues with symptoms of schizophrenia. This is a more complicated condition to treat, but it is treatable.
Individuals with bipolar disorder are at high risk for bad choices and serious depression. Treatment is needed to help keep them healthy.
